Isaiah 23

Javan and his sons are collectively the various Greek tribes.

1 Chronicles 1:7 And the sons of Javan [Greece]; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.

The isles of Elishah which are praised by Ezekiel (Ezekiel 27:7) for their blue and purple dyes; are the Peloponnesus, famous for its purple dyes (Bochart); AEolis (Josephus, Knobel); Hellas (Michaelis, Rosenmüller, Kalisch); without doubt a maritime people of Grecian stock (‘Speaker’s Commentary’).

Dodanim: Dordona in Epirus (Michaelis, Rosenmüller); the Dardaniaus, or Troy (Gesenius); the Daunians of South Italy (Kalisch); the Rhodani in Gaul, reading as in 1 Chronicles 1:7 (Bochart).

Tarshish is thought to be in various places from Tarsus in Cilicia to Carthage or Spain, It is certainly possible that Tarshish refers to a tribe which could be in multiple cities and areas, Tarshish is certainly a seafaring people of the Greeks.

Kittim: the larger Mediterranean islands around Greece like Crete and Cyprus.

The ships of the Greeks howl at the fall of Tyre for they have been made rich by trade with Tyre.

Isaiah 23 is about the demise of the main trading cities of Lebanon; in the ancient past and in the near future in our time.

Isaiah 23:1 The burden of Tyre. Howl, ye ships of Tarshish; for it is laid waste, so that there is no house, no entering in: from the land of Chittim it is revealed to them. 23:2 Be still, ye inhabitants of the [Greek islands] isle; thou whom the merchants of Zidon [Sidon], that pass over the sea, have [made rich] replenished.

Tyre was a market to the nations and traded with Egypt and the Greeks in ancient times. During the tribulation Tyre and the Greeks will again be made rich by trading with Babylon [the New Europe], the spoils of Judah and Egypt [including many Jews to be deported from Palestine].

23:3 And by great waters the seed of Sihor [the Nile or one of its branches], the harvest of the river, is her [Tyre’s] revenue; and she [Tyre] is a mart of nations.

Many shall mourn at the fall of Egypt to the king of the north; and many shall mourn at the fall of Syria Lebanon to the armies from the north and the east, as the Asians move toward Jerusalem.

23:4 Be thou ashamed, O Zidon [Sidon in Lebanon]: for the sea hath spoken, even the strength of the sea, saying, I travail not, nor bring forth children, neither do I nourish up young men, nor bring up virgins. 23:5 As at the report concerning Egypt, so shall they be sorely pained at the report of Tyre.

Those of Tyre and Sidon who are able shall flee to Tarshish

23:6 Pass ye over to Tarshish; howl, ye inhabitants of the isle [part of Tyre is on an island]. 23:7 Is this your joyous city, whose antiquity is of ancient days? her own feet shall carry her [to flee far] afar off to sojourn.

Christ is determined to bring down the pride of Tyre and Sidon and all humanity, to humble them and bring them to repentance.

23:8Who hath taken this counsel against Tyre, the crowning city, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honourable of the earth? 23:9 The LORD of hosts hath purposed it, to stain the pride of all glory, and to bring into contempt all the honourable of the earth.

These things were fulfilled partially in the past and will be fulfilled again and much more fully late in the tribulation.

Because Tyre and Sidon the Greeks shall rejoice at the fall of Israel and Judah and ally themselves to the king of the north [the New Europe] and make merchandise of Judah during the tribulation; Jesus Christ shall correct them strongly.

23:10 [The enemy will] Pass through thy land as a river, O daughter of Tarshish there is no more strength.

23:11 He [Jesus Christ by the Asian armies] stretched out his hand over the sea, he shook the kingdoms: the LORD hath given a commandment against the merchant city, to destroy the strong holds thereof.

23:12 And he said, Thou shalt no more rejoice, O thou oppressed virgin, daughter [descendant] of Zidon [Sidon]: arise, pass over to Chittim [Crete]; there also shalt thou have no rest.

In this end time the German peoples [the modern descendants of Assyria] shall be the foundation of the strength of the Babylon of the New Europe.

23:13 Behold the land of the Chaldeans [Italy] this people was not [weak] l the Assyrian [Germans] for them that dwell in the wilderness: they set up the towers thereof, they raised up the palaces thereof; and he brought it to ruin.

The merchants with ships are dismayed for the fall of Tyre; the city which made them rich.

23:14 Howl, ye ships of Tarshish: for your strength is laid waste.

Speaking of the destruction of Tyre by Nebuchadnezzar; the city would be abandoned for seventy years and then would be reoccupied until our time..

23:15 And it shall come to pass in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten seventy years, according to the days of one king: after the end of seventy years shall Tyre sing as an harlot [and be rebuilt as a trading city]. 23:16 Take an harp, go about the city, thou harlot that hast been forgotten; make sweet melody, sing many songs, that thou mayest be remembered. 23:17 And it shall come to pass after the end of seventy years, that the LORD will visit Tyre, and she shall turn to her hire [commerce], and shall commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth.

In the end time because of her sins the riches of Tyre shall be given to Judah.

Joel  3:4 Yea, and what have ye to do with me, O Tyre, and Zidon, and all the coasts of Palestine [the Palestinians]? will ye render me a recompence? and if ye recompense me, swiftly and speedily will I return your recompence upon your own head;

3:5 Because ye have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried into your temples my goodly pleasant things: 3:6 The children also of Judah and the children of Jerusalem have ye sold unto the Grecians, that ye might remove them far from their border.

3:7 Behold, I will raise them out of the place whither ye have sold them, and will return your recompence upon your own head: 3:8 And I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the children of Judah, and they shall sell them to the Sabeans, to a people far off: for the Lord hath spoken it.

Isaiah 23:18 And her merchandise and her hire shall be holiness to the LORD: it shall not be treasured nor laid up; for her merchandise shall be for them that dwell before the LORD, to eat sufficiently, and for durable clothing.

Isaiah 24

The tribulation on the whole earth

Most of these things happened in part in the past as an example for us and as a fore-type of what is now right in front of us.

Isaiah 24:1 Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof.

Everyone shall suffer and be humbled, both the great and the small.

24:2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him.

This is correction from Jesus Christ for the overspreading of the abominations of humanity and the wickedness of today’s Church of God factions.

24:3 The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken this word.

24:4 The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish.

If humanity is corrected and made desolate because of their transgressions; how much more shall we – who have committed ourselves at baptism to the New Covenant and are supposed to be zealous for our espoused Husband – be corrected for our idolatry and lack of Christ-like zeal to live by every Word of God?

The tribulation is coming because we tolerate false doctrines and fail to rebuke sin; because we have BROKEN the New Covenant, by transgressing the Word of God our Father and committing spiritual adultery against Jesus Christ our espoused Husband!

24:5 The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they [the called out spiritual Ekklesia has broken their New Covenant with God to live by every Word of God] have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. 24:6 [the tribulation is coming to turn men to live by every Word of God] Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.

Because we do not delight in the doctrine and Word of God, and because we have departed from Christ-like zeal for the Word of God; Christ will take away all our joys and give us the affliction of humbling correction.

24:7 The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merryhearted do sigh. 24:8 The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth. 24:9 They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it.

24:10 The city of confusion is broken down: every house is shut up, that no man may come in.

24:11 There is a crying for [lack of food and drink] wine in the streets; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone. 24:12 In the city is left desolation, and the gate is smitten with destruction.

And when the whole earth has been brought to nothing; Jesus Christ shall come with his saints to shake the earth.

24:13When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people, there shall be as the shaking of an olive tree, and as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done.

Revelation 16:16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

16:17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. 16:18 And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.

16:19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. 20And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.

Isaiah 24:14 They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing for the majesty of the LORD, they shall cry aloud from the sea.

Let us repent and glorify Christ; the King of kings, and KEEP all his teachings [doctrines] and commandments; which are to live by every Word of God: that we might be saved.

24:15Wherefore glorify ye the LORD in the fires [be humbled in our correction and glorify God], even the name of the LORD God of Israel in the isles of the sea.

The earth with its great pride and reveling in sin shall be humbled.

24:16 From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs, even glory to the righteous. But I said, My leanness, my leanness, woe unto me! The treacherous dealers have dealt treacherously; yea, the treacherous dealers have dealt very treacherously.

Great trials shall overtake all nations; most especially Judah, Israel and lukewarm apostatizing spiritual Israel.

24:17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth. 24:18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake. 24:19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.

The earth shall also be shaken with a great earthquake at the resurrection of the chosen, BEFORE another earthquake which will come when Christ comes with his bride to take rule over the earth.

Revelation 11:17 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them. 11:13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: . . .

At that time shall many in Judah and Israel believe what God’s prophets have explained to them as they see the dead rising up and will sincerely repent, glorifying God the Father and the Messiah! And they shall delight with even greater jubilation to receive him, when Christ enters Jerusalem as King of kings over all the earth.

Then when Christ destroys the armies fighting at Jerusalem, Judah shall rise up and also fight.

. . . and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

Isaiah 24:20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard [the whole earth shall quiver in a massive worldwide earthquake], and shall be removed like a cottage [like a tent can be moved]; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.

When Christ comes he shall destroy all wickedness and resistance to the Word of God.

24:21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.

Those who fight against Christ shall lay in their graves for many years and shall then be visited and raised up in their time.

24:22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison [of the grave], and after many days shall they be visited.

Zechariah 14 Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. 14:2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. 3Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.

Read the rest of Zechariah and Joel beginning in Chapter 2, for more of the events surrounding the coming of Christ.

Isaiah 24:23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.

Isaiah 25

Christ is praised for demonstrating his great power and humbling the earth.

Isaiah 25:1 O Lord, thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth. 25:2 For thou hast made of a city an heap; of a defenced city a ruin: a palace of strangers to be no city; it shall never be built.

The peoples of the earth shall be humbled and shall repent when Christ has destroyed the proud and self willed.

25:3 Therefore shall the strong people glorify thee, the city of the terrible nations shall fear thee.

Christ has brought down the mighty oppressors and saved the humble who acknowledge their need for his salvation.

25:4 For thou hast been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall. 25:5 Thou shalt bring down the noise of strangers, as the heat in a dry place; even the heat with the shadow of a cloud: the branch of the terrible ones shall be brought low.

25:6 And in this mountain [the Holy Mount in Jerusalem and in the government of Messiah] shall the LORD of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined.

Christ shall destroy the veil of sin that separates humanity from God the Father in heaven

25:7 And he will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering [the veil of sin] cast over all people, and the vail [of sin which separates people from God the Father in heaven] that is spread over all nations.

Isaiah now shows that the coming of Christ is itself a fore-type of the coming of God the Father.

25:8 He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people [their sins] shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it.

Revelation 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

21:2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

21:3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

Isaiah 25:9 And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

25:10 For in this mountain [the Holy Place in Jerusalem] shall the hand of the LORD rest,

Moab [the dominant people of Jordan today] shall be humbled and shall serve Israel; for they rejoiced at the fall of Judah and Israel and allied themselves with the Babylon of the New Europe. (Zephaniah 2)

. . . and Moab shall be trodden down under him, even as straw is trodden down for the dunghill.

25:11 And he [the Messiah, the Christ] shall spread forth his hands in the midst of them, as he that swimmeth spreadeth forth his hands to swim: and he shall bring down their pride together with the spoils of their hands. 25:12 And the fortress of the high fort of thy [Jordan’s] walls [defenses] shall he bring down, lay low, and bring to the ground, even to the dust.
