Then the YHVH Elohim who became Messiah the Lamb of God the Father, instructed the people to go in and possess the land; only HE said would not be with them, but would send an angel in HIS place. This because the people were continually provoking HIM, and if HE were with them HE might destroy them
Exodus 33:1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Depart, and go up hence, thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it: 33:2 And I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite: 33:3 Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way.
This statement by their Deliverer caused the people to repent of their sin of idolatry with the gold calves.
33:4 And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments.
The people repented and did not adorn themselves in their shame
33:5 For the LORD had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked [very stubborn, self willed, heardhearted] people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments [put off your pleasant things and repent in sackcloth and fasting] from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee. 33:6 And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount Horeb.
Moses then built the tabernacle according to the plan that God gave him, and set it up a distance outside the camp because of the sins of the people.
33:7 And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp.
Then those who sought God had to leave the camp to come to the tabernacle. This a picture that we need to leave our worldliness to seek and find God. Now when Moses had set up the tabernacle all the people looked out of their tents to see what would happen.
33:8 And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses [watched to see], until he was gone into the tabernacle.
When Moses entered the tabernacle, the cloud came down and rested at the tabernacle entrance and God spoke with Moses. The people saw this with their own eyes [not having seen Moses on the top of Sinai] and the people fell down to worship God.
This coming of Christ to the tabernacle DOOR was representative of Jesus Christ as the DOOR to Salvation.
John 10:9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
Exodus 33:9 And it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the Lord talked with Moses. 33:10 And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door.
Then YHVH spoke to Moses and Joshua out of the cloud.
33:11 And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.
Moses reasons that God should go with him and that Christ should be with them, and not an angel as God had said. Moses wants to know why God has abandoned him by turning away from the people.
33:12 And Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send [the angel and not God to go with him] with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight.
Moses asks God to be with him and the people to teach, guide and lead them.
33:13 Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.
God then promises to remain with Moses and the people.
33:14 And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.
Moses replies asking God to let them remain at Sinai and not command them to enter the land if God will not go with them.
This is a type that spiritual Israel may not enter the spiritual Promised Land of eternal life, if they are not zealously faithful to God. God will be with us and bring us into the eternal Promised Land, ONLY if we are with him and quick to obey and follow him in all things.
33:15 And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence [If God will not be with them then they would stay at Sinai and not go without God into the land of promise].
Moses speaks that it is the presence of God that set Israel apart from all others.
It is the same in spiritual Israel; for if we do not diligently follow our God and his whole Word, HOW are we different from any other people?
33:16 For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.
Then YHVH accepted to remain with the people for Moses sake.
33:17 And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.
Then Moses asked to see the Creator in his glory, for before this Moses had only heard his voice, or seen Him hidden by the cloud
33:18 And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.
Then God who became Christ showed Moses his glory in part, someday when changed to spirit Moses and the Chosen will see Him in His glory fully.
John 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
Then in the resurrection we shall see him as he is.
John 17:24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
The chosen will be given the same kind of glory when changed to spirit! For the Door of our Salvation, will give us a glorious spiritual body like his own.
John 17:22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
Exodus 33:19 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy. 33:20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
Moses was then taken and hidden in a cleft of rock, that he would see only a small part of God in his glory.
33:21 And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock: 33:22 And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by: 33:23 And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.
Then God commands Moses to make two tablets of stone like the first two and that HE, God, would write on them.
Exodus 34:1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest.
Moses is to come to God at the top of the mount alone, no other living man or creature is to be seen on the mount. The top of Sinai represented the heaven of God the Father, and Moses as the mediator of the Mosaic Covenant was to physically climb the mount, as an allegory; that in future the Spiritual Mediator of the New Covenant would ascend to the heaven of God the Father!
34:2 And be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning unto mount Sinai, and present thyself there to me in the top of the mount. 34:3 And no man shall come up with thee, neither let any man be seen throughout all the mount; neither let the flocks nor herds feed before that mount.
Moses obeyed God and made the two tablets of stone, and in the morning he went up into the mount to meet God.
34:4 And he hewed two tables of stone like unto the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone. 34:5 And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD.
The Eternal who became Jesus Christ then proclaimed his mercy for the sincerely repentant and his wrath on the unrepentant sinner.
34:6 And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, 34:7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, [of the sincerely repentant who STOP breaking his Word] and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.
34:8 And Moses made haste, and bowed his head [prostrated himself before God in an act of total submission] toward the earth, and worshipped.
Moses begs God’s mercy for the people.
34:9 And he said, If now I have found grace in thy sight, O LORD, let my LORD, I pray thee, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance
Then God promises marvels for his people; this being an allegory of the spiritual marvels that he will perform for the spiritually called out of the New Covenant.
34:10 And he [God] said, Behold, I make a covenant: before all thy people I will do marvels, such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation: and all the people among which thou art shall see the work of the LORD: for it is a terrible thing that I will do with thee.
As God promised to drive out the Canaanites as a type of sin.
Spiritually our God will drive out all sin from his people if they will only obey his Word and follow him.
34:11 Observe thou that which I command thee this day: behold, I drive out before thee the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite.
As Israel was to make no covenant with the Canaanites because they were a type of sin; we are to keep ourselves clean from all sin and compromise with the Word of God!
34:12 Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither thou goest, lest it be for a snare in the midst of thee:
Spiritually we are to destroy all sin out of our lives; including our idols of mammon, men and organizational entities. We are to exalt the Eternal above all else!
Organizing is not wrong as long as the organizations help us to focus on God: It is when those organizations seek to come between us and God that they become an abomination to God!
As physical Israel was not to become of one flesh with the daughters of the Canaanites, we are NOT to marry the unconverted; nor are we to become spiritually one with sin by learning the ways of the heathen to worship God according to our own ways: We are to worship God according to HIS commandments!
34:13 But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves: 34:14 For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God: 34:15 Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and one call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice; 34:16 And thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods, and make thy sons go a whoring after their gods.
As Israel was not to make idols, andare we to make idols in either the physical or spiritual sense!
34:17 Thou shalt make thee no molten gods.
Here we have a specific command to eat unleavened bread for seven days. How is it that some claim it is not sin to disobey God in this matter?
It is because they have no zeal to live by every Word of God! and so face the condemnation of the stubborn stiff necked self willed who rebel against the Word of God!
34:18 The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep. Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, as I commanded thee, in the time of the month Abib: for in the month Abib thou camest out from Egypt.
All the first born belong to God, because he delivered Israel’s first born in Egypt, and because God the Father gave up HIS firstborn the Lamb of God for sinners. The first born of the clean animals are to be given to the priests and were then used for the Daily Sacrifices and the National Sacrifices on behalf of the nation.
The first born males of Israel were to be redeemed with money, and the first born of the unclean creatures are to be redeemed with a lamb.
34:19 All that openeth the matrix [the first born] is mine; and every firstling among thy cattle, whether ox or sheep, that is male. 34:20 But the firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb: and if thou redeem him not, then shalt thou break his neck. All the firstborn of thy sons thou shalt redeem. And none shall appear before me empty.
We are to rest on the Sabbath even during harvest time The Pentecost and Fall Harvest commandments are repeated.
34:21 Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest: in earing time and in harvest thou shalt rest. 34:22 And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the year’s end. 34:23 Thrice in the year shall all your menchildren appear before the LORD God, the God of Israel.
Only if we are zealous for the Sabbath and the annual Sabbaths and Festivals to keep them as God has commanded [including on the correct day that God’s Biblical Calendar requires]; will Spiritual Israel be blessed!
34:24 For I will cast out the nations before thee, and enlarge thy borders: neither shall any man desire thy land, when thou shalt go up to appear before the LORD thy God thrice in the year.
No sacrifice may be offered with leaven, for leaven is a type of sin. A whole Bible word study on the subject of “leaven” would be rewarding.
34:25 Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven; neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the passover be left unto the morning.
The first of the first fruits here refers to the Wave Offering during the Feast of Unleavened Bread.
Simmering a kid in its own mother’s milk was a fertility rite of the Canaanites, and has nothing to do with eating milk products with meat.
34:26 The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring unto the house of the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother’s milk.
Moses is commanded to write these words on the two tablets of stone. Previously God had written all these words on BOTH sides of the two tablets of stone.
34:27 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write thou these words: for after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with thee and with Israel.
Moses was on the mount for forty days and nights and the Eternal sustained him.
34:28 And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.
Moses shined reflecting some of the glory of God; typical that we should also shine with the glory of God in our conduct, as a Light on a Hill; by enthusiastically learning and living by every Word of God.
Matthew 5:13 Ye are the salt [our zeal for godliness preserves the earth from utter destruction] of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house
5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill [to keep fully, live by every Word of God as a shining example, for us to also keep as an example for others] .
Exodus 34:29 And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him. 34:30 And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him.
Then Moses taught the elders and all the people the Words of God given to him on Sinai.
34:31 And Moses called unto them; and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned unto him: and Moses talked with them. 34:32 And afterward all the children of Israel came nigh: and he gave them in commandment all that the LORD had spoken with him in mount Sinai.
Moses covered his face until the shining glory had diminished, because the people feared; but when Moses went into the tabernacle to speak to God he removed the vail.
34:33 And till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a vail on his face. 34:34 But when Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he took the vail off, until he came out. And he came out, and spake unto the children of Israel that which he was commanded. 34:35 And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone: and Moses put the vail upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him.
