Joel begins with the tribulation and speaks of the tribulation and the glorious coming of Messiah.
Joel 1:1 The word of the LORD that came to Joel the son of Pethuel.
1:2 Hear this, ye old men, and give ear, all ye inhabitants of the land. Hath this been in your days, or even in the days of your fathers?
1:3 Tell ye your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation.
Great famine is coming due to crop pestilence and drought
1:4 That which the palmerworm hath left hath the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the cankerworm eaten; and that which the cankerworm hath left hath the caterpiller eaten.
There will be no grapes for wine or grain for beer and those given to alcohol will have none during much of the tribulation. The same can be said for various narcotics and drugs as their supply will also dry up. This is a good thing as our people are sobered up and forced to think of deeper much more meaningful things.
1:5 Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.
Now God tells us that many enemies will come up and over-flood Palestine [My land]. Jerusalem and Judah shall be occupied of their enemies for the last 42 months before Messiah comes; while the other nations of Israel [primarily the Anglo Saxon countries] will be defeated not necessarily occupied.
1:6 For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and without number, whose teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the cheek teeth of a great lion.
The victors will demand the wealth of all the Judeo Anglo Saxon peoples as his spoils
1:7 He hath laid my vine waste, and barked my fig tree: he hath made it clean bare, and cast it away; the branches thereof are made white.
God will allow others to take everything away from us: to wake us up from our spiritual intoxication with pride.
This is an allegory that we in Spiritual Israel are become drunk with pride and self righteousness, we have turned from the commandments of God unto corporate idols of our own devising; looking to idols of men as our moral authority instead of standing on the word of God.
God tells us to mourn for our sins as a young widow mourns in her widowhood; because our Husband has rejected us.
1:8 Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.
Physical Israel is told to lament and repent; and Spiritual Israel is to lament our sins and repent, to wholeheartedly seek the Husband of our baptismal commitment.
1:9 The meat offering and the drink offering is cut off from the house of the LORD; the priests, the LORD’s ministers, mourn.
Remember that the Meat [Unleavened Bread] Offering and the pouring out of the Drink [Wine] Offering symbolizes! These are symbols of the body of Christ broken for us, and the life blood of Christ poured out for his Called Out.
Jesus, knowing that lambs could not be sacrificed at Passover after the destruction of the temple and wanting to reveal what the Meat and Drink Offerings represented; explained the eating of the broken Unleavened Bread Offering and the drinking of the Wine in the Passover service.
The House or Temple of the Lord; is the Called Out of this age!
2 Corinthians 6:16 . . . for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
1 Corinthians 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? 3:17 If any man defile the temple of God [with sin], him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
This removal of the Passover offering from the Called Out of Laodicea pictures their being spewed out by Jesus Christ, Rev 3:15; and no longer covered by the blood of the New Covenant; because of their idolatry and spiritual adultery against HIM!
God will smash our corporate idols and take away the pleasant things of this world that we have compromised with his commandments for; so that we might know that our idols of men are NOT gods at all; and that we should be zealous for the Husband of our baptismal commitment.
As these corporate organizations teach people to exalt men as their idols and to follow the traditions contrary to God’s word; our jealous Husband will destroy them for turning the flock away from HIM and towards following themselves. HE will smash our pride and destroy our idols, calling on us to return to him in true repentance.
1:10 The field is wasted, the land mourneth; for the corn [grain or seed] is wasted: the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth [does not flow forth].
This speaks of great famine.
Corn was discovered in the New World and was unknown even in the middle ages, at that time the word “corn” simply meant a corn or a grain of something; for example corned beef is so called because of the corns of salt used to cure the meat.
1:11 Be ye ashamed, O ye husbandmen; howl, O ye vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley; because the harvest of the field is perished.
1:12 The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languisheth; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are withered: because joy is withered away from the sons of men.
Because our nations rebel against God he will take away our foodstuffs to teach the people to hunger and thirst after God’s Word
1:13 Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests: howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meat offering and the drink offering is withholden from the house of your God.
The true shepherds are told to mourn; for the Atoning Sacrifice of Christ is withheld from his Called Out of Laodicea, the House of God. Because we have rejected our LORD for spiritual adulteries and idols of men, we have been rejected by our espoused Husband.
Revelation 3:14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;
3:15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 3:16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
Yes, we are HOT for our own ways and for our corporate idols; and yes we are Cold for the commandments of our God; such a mixture of hot and cold is called lukewarm. We pay lip service to God and his commandments as we compromise with them and make them of no effect by our false traditions.
Today is a time for sincere repentance that we might be spared the righteous correction of an offended God. Soon very many will fall into severe correction to bring them to repentance if they will not repent now.
Joel 1:14 Sanctify ye a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the LORD your God, and cry unto the LORD,
Despite the various attempts to limit the Day of the Lord; the term applies to the entire period of God’s correction, not merely to the seven last plagues, or the day of his coming. the Day of God’s correction of his people is near at hand.
1:15 Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.
Our land will be plagued with great drought
1:16 Is not the meat [all food] cut off before our eyes, yea, joy and gladness from the house of our God?
1:17 The seed is rotten under their clods, the garners are laid desolate, the barns are broken down; for the corn is withered.
There is no more joy for the people. We have been wounded and broken as Hosea describes.
Hosea 6:1 Come, and let us return unto the Lord: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.
6:2 After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.
6:3 Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the Lord: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth
Joel 1:18 How do the beasts groan! the herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; yea, the flocks of sheep are made desolate.
Let us all therefore repent before our God; let us take hold of his Word and plead with him to cover our transgressions that we might be reconciled to God.
1:19 O LORD, to thee will I cry: for the fire [severe drought brings fires] hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned all the trees of the field.
1:20 The beasts of the field cry also unto thee: for the rivers of waters are dried up, and the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness.
Joel 2 describes the last battle when the armies of Asia shall come down to Jerusalem to confront the last redoubt of the false prophet and the king of the north. When that battle is joined and half of the city falls to the Asian armies; then at that moment Jesus Christ will intervene WITH his chosen resurrected saints.
Zechariah 14:1 Behold, the day of the Lord cometh [in this context the term “day of the Lord” applies to the last battle when Messiah comes to the earth], and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.
14:2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
14:3 Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.
Joel 2:1 Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand;
Jerusalem have been occupied for over three years by the army of the New Europe and now there is war between Europe and Asia; and the Asian armies have the city surrounded and are attacking.
2:2 A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.
2:3 A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.
2:4 The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run.
2:5 Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array.
2:6 Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness.
2:7 They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks:
2:8 Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded.
2:9 They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief.
2:10 The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining:
Then Messiah the Deliverer, the Christ; shall intervene to save the earth. He shall come with his resurrected saints to rule the earth in righteousness and teach the way to salvation to humanity.
2:11 And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?
Repent for the Lord is strong to deliver, let all evil be destroyed and let all men repent before the Mighty One of Spiritual Israel! Repent and he shall forgive and receive you!
Brethren, if we all sincerely repent and wholeheartedly turn to our espoused Husband in passionate zeal for his ways even now; he would rejoice in us and we should all be saved from his correction.
I call on all peoples to repent of their idolatries and spiritual adulteries and false human traditions, and to open up the Word of the Lord and study it with an open mind to seek out the truth of God and not with preconceived ideas of proving their traditions.
Remember how they throw out the book of Nehemiah so that they could cling to their false traditions and continue to pollute the Sabbath by buying and selling?
Remember how men threw out the scriptures concerning the Sabbath, changing the Sabbath of God from the commanded seventh day, to the first day of the week in rejection of God’s word for man’s traditions: While we still call the Sabbath holy as we routinely pollute it.
We are loyal to the traditions of men and NOT to the Word of God; even out-rightly rejecting parts of God’s Word that we do not want to obey. That is a shame and a disgrace, a blot on our conversion that must be removed.
All who do not repent will be corrected.
2:12 Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:
2:13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.
2:14 Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the LORD your God?
Fast the fast of sincere wholehearted repentance and turn to live by EVERY WORD of God
2:15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly:
2:16 Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his [forsake his wedding night to repent before God] chamber, and the bride out of her closet [forsake her wedding night to fast and repent before God] .
2:17 Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep [in repentance and prayer for deliverance] between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O LORD, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?
If we do these things and seek the Eternal with a sincere and whole heart, he will deliver us
2:18 Then will the LORD be jealous for his land, and pity his people.
Those who do not repent and turn to a genuine zeal for godliness will be cast into the severe correction of the 42 month trial of the great tribulation, that through the affliction of the flesh, the spirit will be humbled to repentance and be saved.
Then the Messiah shall come to save all people beginning with Israel, bringing them into a New Covenant with him (Jer 31:31), because they have been humbled and are repentant, ready to accept their Lord. And all repentant humanity shall be grafted all into Israel.
Then God will bless Israel and all nations who turn to him.
2:19 Yea, the LORD will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn [grain, food], and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen:
2:20 But I will remove far off from you the northern army [the armies Asia which are attacking Jerusalem will be destroyed] , and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.
Christ shall come with his chosen and will destroy the invading armies and deliver Israel and Judah at Jerusalem.
Then the Kingdom of God shall be established over all the earth, with David ruling a united Israel and the twelve apostles ruling each one a tribe of Israel; and Jesus Christ ruling the whole world as King of kings and Lord of lords.
Then righteousness shall break forth and cover the earth with peace like a garment; and God shall bless all those who love him enough to keep all of his commandments and internalize his very nature, becoming united with HIM as one mind, spirit and nature!
2:21 Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the LORD will do great things.
2:22 Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field: for the pastures of the wilderness do spring, for the tree beareth her fruit, the fig tree and the vine do yield their strength.
2:23 Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.
2:24 And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.
2:25 And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.
2:26 And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed.
The people of God shall be doing the will of God and shall not be doing those things for which they should be ashamed. And all the earth shall KNOW that the Lord God is among them, and they shall keep all of his commandments without compromise, doing the will of God and living by EVERY WORD of God.
2:27 And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the LORD your God, and none else [there is no other God]: and my people shall never be ashamed.
If we keep all the commandments of God and internalize his very nature as expressed and defined by the whole Word of God; we shall NEVER be ashamed!
And how shall we do this? Because we shall be humbled and brought to repentance and God SHALL pour out his spirit on ALL flesh, right after the day of the Lord, on the Feast of Pentecost!
As he poured out his Spirit in a small way on a few people on the Pentecost of 31 A.D.; he shall pour out his Spirit in a much greater fulfilling in the near future.
Acts 2:15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. 2:16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
2:17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
Joel 2:28 And it shall come to pass afterward [after Christ comes], that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
2:29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
Christ’s coming will be accompanied by these signs.
2:30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
2:31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the LORD come.
Then after the armies who resist Christ are destroyed, Messiah shall enter the city of Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives just as he entered Jerusalem over nineteen hundred years ago; to the rejoicing of all the people, who will shout Hosanna [Save us] and accept him as their King; and when Pentecost comes God’s Holy Spirit will be poured out on all flesh and all who call on him to save will be delivered!
2:32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.
Chapter three is about the deliverance of physical Israel and Judah and how they will be taken out of their captivity and brought back to the land of Palestine.
Joel 3:1 For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall bring again [take away] the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem,
As the New Europe attacks Asia in the third year and its leaders then flee to Jerusalem for their last stand, the nations of Asia will come up against the city
3:2 I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.
During the 42 months of the tribulation the Jewish state will be occupied, many Jews being killed or removed from the land
3:3 And they have cast lots for my people; and have given [traded] a boy for an harlot, and sold a girl for wine, that they might drink.
Tyre, Sidon, Lebanon and the Palestinians will join with the New Europe and those occupying Judea as per Psalm 83.
3:4 Yea, and what have ye to do with me, O Tyre, and Zidon, and all the coasts of Palestine? will ye render me a recompence? and if ye recompense me, swiftly and speedily will I return your recompence upon your own head;
3:5 Because ye have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried into your temples my goodly pleasant things:
When the Jewish extremists break the coming peace deal, the Islamic nations except for Egypt will sweep through the land as God removes his protection on all the Israelite nations for the overspreading of our sins.
The New Europe perhaps acting in the name of mercy, will concentrate the Jews in ghettos for their safety and the Palestinians will seek to sell and deport them from the land making money selling them. Many Jews will be sold from Palestine to Greece and other nations to remove them from the land, but that project will not be completed before Christ comes and there will be a remnant of Judah still remaining in Palestine and Jerusalem.
3:6 The children also of Judah and the children of Jerusalem have ye sold unto the Grecians, that ye might remove them far from their border.
God will give the land to a united Judah and Israel; and will reverse the situation and give teh Palestinians into the hands of Judah.
3:7 Behold, I will raise them out of the place whither ye have sold them, and will return your recompence upon your own head:
As the Palestinians will seek to remove the Jews from the land by selling them to other nations [probably as laborers in menial or dangerous jobs] through Lebanese brokers; so God will give the Palestinians to Judah who will sell many of the Palestinians to remove them from the land themselves.
3:8 And I will sell your sons and your daughters [the Palestinians and many of Lebanon] into the hand of the children of Judah, and they shall sell them to the Sabeans [variously Yemen, Ethiopia or India], to a people far off: for the LORD hath spoken it.
God will deliver all Israel at that time and remove most Palestinians from off the land. At that time God will also remove the Palestinians from off the land that he gave to them temporarily, when he removed Israel in the eighth century c 721 B.C., 2 Kings 17:23-24.
God calls forth all the nations of the earth and in particular the armies of Europe and Asia; to the battle of the day of the Lord’s coming
3:9 Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up:
3:10 Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong.
3:11 Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD.
3:12 Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.
3:13 Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great.
3:14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.
3:15 The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.
The when half of Jerusalem (Zechariah 14), has fallen to the army of Asia Messiah the Christ will come with his resurrected faithful and will destroy the armies of wickedness and set up an eternal kingdom, Dan 2.
3:16 The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.
3:17 So shall ye know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers [no unconverted persons shall enter the city for all shall be converted into the New Covenant of espousal to Christ. The millennial kingdom and city are themselves analogies of the Eighth Day Feast representing man and God living in eternal peace and harmony as pictured by the New Jerusalem Rev 21] pass through her any more.
When the enemy has taken half the city and has the remainder of the people trapped; then Christ steps on the Mt of Olives and it shall split in half making a way of escape for the people as he destroys the pursuing enemy.
Zechariah 14:2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
14:3 Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. 14:4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.
14:5 And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the Lord my God shall come, and all the saints with him.
Revelation 14:15 And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe.
14:16 And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth; and the earth was reaped.
14:17 And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle.
14:18 And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.
14:19 And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.
14:20 And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.
A furlong is an 8th of a mile.
This now speaks of the millennial Kingdom of God
Joel 3:18 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth out of the house of the LORD, and shall water the valley of Shittim.
3:19 Egypt shall be a desolation, and Edom shall be a desolate wilderness, for the violence against the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land.
3:20 But Judah shall dwell for ever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.
3:21 For I will cleanse their blood [guiltiness] that I have not [previously] cleansed: for the LORD [Messiah the Christ shall dwell in Jerusalem] dwelleth in Zion.
The blood guilt of sin shall be cleansed for all repentant people through the atoning sacrifice of the Lamb of God.
Joel 2:32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.
