Leviticus 21 – 22

Leviticus 21

No priest of God may touch any dead body, except that God in his mercy allows the touching of those immediately near of kin to himself.   This is a physical instruction to convey the spiritual lesson that all priests are to remain undefiled by association with the wages of sin which is death.

The called out to the New Covenant are all called to become priests after our High Priest Jesus Christ, and are to remain unpolluted by sin and the uncleanness of the wages of sin, which is death.

Leviticus 21:1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto the priests the sons of Aaron, and say unto them, There shall none be defiled for the dead among his people: 21:2 But for his kin, that is near unto him, that is, for his mother, and for his father, and for his son, and for his daughter, and for his brother. 21:3 And for his sister a virgin, that is nigh unto him, which hath had no husband; for her may he be defiled. 21:4 But he shall not defile himself, being a chief man among his people, to profane himself.

The called out must not mourn for the dead by afflicting themselves physically, so that they abase themselves before the public.  Public asceticism [self abuse] is not humility before God, it is a fraud designed to make people think that such men are humble, when they actually reject God’s ways and do this to impress the spiritually ignorant.

Public shows of mourning for those not of near kin, or fraudulent shows of fake put on humility, are designed to impress and deceive the public.

We are to follow the whole Word of God and not to follow any such man who lives in rebellion against God while putting on a public show of false humility.

21:5 They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in their flesh [this was a common practice of other nations in morning for the dead].

We are to be holy as God is holy, teaching the righteousness of the TRUTH of the whole Word of God, not making grand public gestures to deceive people into turning away from God to follow such traditions of men.

21:6 They shall be holy unto their God, and not profane the name of their God: for the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and the bread of their God, they do offer: therefore they shall be holy.

The called out are to be holy in their household and are forbidden to marry an immoral or a divorced woman [an unconverted spouse]. As this was a law for the priesthood in physical Mosaic Israel, and it is a binding law in Spiritual Israel today.  We are all called to be priests of Melchizedek.

If a man is married to a woman and they divorce “while remaining in the faith”; they may not marry another.

If a man or woman is divorced for pornea [disloyalty] which is the only lawful reason for divorce; then he/she is to be rejected from the assembly as unconverted.

Matthew 5:32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication [pornea, disloyalty especially sexual], causeth her to commit adultery: [and] whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

Leviticus 21:7 They shall not take a wife that is a whore, or profane; neither shall they take a woman put away [divorced] from her husband: for he is holy unto his God.

Called Out brethren are absolutely forbidden to divorce and then remarry “within the faith”. Jesus Christ said that those who do so are living in adultery.

There are many in today’s assemblies including elders who are living in the sin of adultery; for which cause they have been separated from God and their prayers are not heard.

Yet if one’s spouse turns away and hates the faith leaving it and leaves the faithful spouse; the faithful are then free to remarry, only within the faith.

21:8 Thou shalt sanctify him therefore; for he offereth the bread of thy God: he [the teaches the unleavened bread of the Word of God] shall be holy unto thee: for I the LORD, which sanctify you, am holy.

Our offspring who reject this way will face judgment if they do not repent.  Therefore we must diligently teach them to be faithful to the whole Word of God.

21:9 And the daughter of any priest, if she profane herself by playing the whore, she profaneth her father: she shall be burnt with fire.

The physical high priest was the mediator of the Mosaic Covenant, and a type of Jesus Christ the Mediator of the New Covenant; and as such,  must not mourn for any dead person, even his nearest kin, by damaging his body, or degrading himself before the people.

21:10 And he that is the high priest among his brethren, upon whose head the anointing oil was poured, and that is consecrated to put on the garments, shall not uncover his head, nor rend his clothes; 21:11 Neither shall he go in to any dead body, nor defile himself for his father, or for his mother; 21:12 Neither shall he go out of the sanctuary, nor profane the sanctuary of his God; for the crown of the anointing oil of his God is upon him: I am the LORD.

The High Priest must take a virgin to wife!  What marvelous and complete symbolism; for the bride of the physical High Priest is representative of the bride of the spiritual High Priest Jesus Christ!

The bride of Christ has been made pure as a virgin through sincere repentance and the atoning sacrifice of her Husband and her zeal to be faithful to HIM ALONE, above ALL others!

21:13 And he shall take a wife in her virginity. 21:14 A widow, or a divorced woman, or profane, or an harlot, these shall he not take: but he shall take a virgin of his own people to wife.

Revelation 14:4 These are they which were not defiled with women [false religions, gods and doctrines]; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb. 14:5 And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.

Leviticus 21:15 Neither shall he profane his seed among his people: for I the LORD do sanctify him.

The physical high priest of Aaron, if he is faithful; is sanctified as a type of the eternal spiritual High Priest of the New Covenant, Jesus Christ!

As no person with any blemish out of the sons of Aaron may approach to serve in the Temple; so NO person with any spiritual blemish may be changed to spirit to serve in the eternal spiritual priesthood of Melchizedek [Jesus Christ]!

As physical Israel was to be holy as God is holy; how much more should the New Covenant spiritual Israel be free from all sin and defilement and be holy as God is Holy?

Ephesians  5:25 . . . . Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

Leviticus 21:16 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 21:17 Speak unto Aaron, saying, Whosoever he be of thy seed in their generations that hath any blemish, let him not approach to offer the bread of his God.

Jude 1:23 And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire [with warnings and by rebuking sin]; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh [blemished with worldliness and the sins of the flesh, or any defilement of sin and all uncleanness].

All these physical blemishes are types of the spiritual blemishes and defilement’s of sin and uncleanness that will keep us OUT of the resurrection to spirit.  We are to be spiritually clean and free from all sin and from all uncleanness; if we want to enter into the resurrection to spirit.

We must NEVER compromise with zeal to learn, understand and live by every Word of God, fully internalizing godliness as our very own nature!  In that way God’s nature which is contained in his Word, will become our nature; and we will become like him and at one with God our Father in heaven!

Leviticus 21:18 For whatsoever man he be that hath a blemish, he shall not approach: a blind man, or a lame, or he that hath a flat nose, or any thing superfluous, 21:19 Or a man that is brokenfooted, or brokenhanded, 21:20 Or crookbackt, or a dwarf, or that hath a blemish in his eye, or be scurvy, or scabbed, or hath his stones broken; 21:21 No man that hath a blemish of the seed of Aaron the priest shall come nigh to offer the offerings of the LORD made by fire: he hath a blemish; he shall not come nigh to offer the bread of his God.

Physically blemished priests are not to offer sacrifices being imperfect types of the perfect Christ, but may eat the bread of God; which represents internalizing Jesus Christ the Bread of Life.

This is a lesson that today’s brethren are not and will not be priests of God until after the resurrection.  We are all now called to BECOME priests of God at the resurrection and we are to be hearers and learners of godliness until every blemish of sin is overcome.

It is when Christ resurrects his chosen that God’s chosen will fully become the priests of God of the order of Jesus Christ.  The first fruits are in training to become priests and kings of Christ, but we are not kings and priests until we have been judged and chosen and resurrected to that office.

21:22 He shall eat the bread of his God, both of the most holy, and of the holy. 21:23 Only he shall not go in unto the vail, nor come nigh unto the altar, because he hath a blemish; that he profane not my sanctuaries: for I the LORD do sanctify them.

21:24 And Moses told it [taught these commands of God] unto Aaron, and to his sons, and unto all the children of Israel.

Leviticus 22

The priests of the Mosaic and the New Covenant may not approach holy things in a state of defilement by sin.  In the spiritual New Covenant application this means that no person who is defiled by sin may have a part ion the resurrection to eternal life, unless they have their sin atoned for, by sincere  repentance and the application of the sacrifice of Christ.

Jesus Christ will only apply his sacrifice to the sincerely repentant who commit to go and sin no more.  The false teaching that Christ is love and forgives automatically, being full of mercy so we need not be zealous to learn and live by every Word of God, is from Satan.

Leviticus 22:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 22:2 Speak unto Aaron and to his sons, that they separate themselves from the holy things of the children of Israel, and that they profane not my holy name in those things which they hallow unto me: I am the LORD. 22:3 Say unto them, Whosoever he be of all your seed among your generations, that goeth unto the holy things, which the children of Israel hallow unto the LORD, having his uncleanness upon him, [the unrepentant sinner who is defiled by sin is cut off from God] that soul shall be cut off from my presence: I am the LORD.

Physical uncleanness is a type of spiritual uncleanness and the pollution of sin.

Notice here that sunset and evening are used synonymously; proving that evening truly means sunset.  Yes you CAN prove that evening means literal sunset from the Bible.

22:4 What man soever of the seed of Aaron is a leper, or hath a running issue; he shall not eat of the holy things, until he be clean. And whoso toucheth any thing that is unclean by the dead, or a man whose seed goeth from him; 22:5 Or whosoever toucheth any creeping thing, whereby he may be made unclean, or a man of whom he may take uncleanness, whatsoever uncleanness he hath; 22:6 The soul which hath touched any such shall be unclean until even, and shall not eat of the holy things, unless he wash his flesh with water. 22:7 And when the sun is down, he shall be clean, and shall afterward eat of the holy things; because it is his food.

Besides the unclean dead creatures, anything that is not killed by human hand is unclean for us.

22:8 That which dieth of itself, or is torn with beasts, he shall not eat to defile himself therewith; I am the LORD.

No sinner can enter the spiritual family of God

2 Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness [sin] of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

We are to be spiritually pure from all sin and from all teachings contrary to the whole Word of God; and we are to be pure and clean from all compromising with any part of the whole Word of God if we want to enter the resurrection of the just.

2 Corinthians 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 6:15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

God will not dwell in an unclean sinful person!  We must sincerely repent and then go on to: SIN NO MORE through the indwelling strength of the Spirit of God!

6:17 Wherefore come out from among them [sinners and those who teach license to sin and compromise with the Word of God], and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.

Leviticus 22:9 They shall therefore keep mine ordinance, lest they bear sin for it, and die therefore, if they profane it: I the LORD do sanctify them.

Just as only those of the Mosaic priesthood under the Mosaic Covenant may approach the physical holy things; Only those called out to become priests of the New Covenant, and repent and make a baptismal commitment TO GO AND SIN NO MORE: may be given the Holy Spirit.

22:10 There shall no stranger [unconverted person] eat of the holy thing: a sojourner [someone visiting a priest and eating at his table] of the priest, or an hired servant, shall not eat of the holy thing.

In the Mosaic covenant those who are purchased may eat the holy things; symbolizing that those called into the New Covenant have been bought with a great price, the life of Jesus Christ their Creator.

The children of the FAITHFUL Called Out, are sanctified by their FAITHFUL parents, as long as they are subject to their FAITHFUL parents.

22:11 But if the priest buy any soul with his money, he shall eat of it, and he that is born in his house: they shall eat of his meat.

A priest’s daughter who takes a husband, is to be subject to her husband and is no longer sanctified by her father since she has left his house.  But, if she return to her father’s family childless and is subject to her father again, she is to be sanctified by her obedience to her father if he is a faithful priest of God.

22:12 If the priest’s daughter also be married unto a stranger, she may not eat of an offering of the holy things. 22:13 But if the priest’s daughter be a widow, or divorced, and have no child, and is returned unto her father’s house, as in her youth, she shall eat of her father’s meat: but there shall be no stranger eat thereof.

A penalty for sinning by ignorance of holy things

22:14 And if a man eat of the holy thing unwittingly, then he shall put the fifth part thereof unto it, and shall give it unto the priest with the holy thing.

We are not to remain in sin and then continue to partake of holy things.

This applies particularly to those modern elders who draw tithes from the brethren while remaining in a sinful state; teaching false things, failing to strongly rebuke sin and failing to set an example of enthusiastic zeal to live by every Word of God.

22:15 And they shall not profane the holy things of the children of Israel, which they offer unto the LORD; 22:16 Or suffer them to bear the iniquity of trespass, when they eat their holy things: for I the LORD do sanctify them.

The burnt offerings of the people must be made of their free will and not extorted from them by words or pressure.  This is a type of the money offerings of the brethren today; which must never be coerced.

22:17 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 22:18 Speak unto Aaron, and to his sons, and unto all the children of Israel, and say unto them, Whatsoever he be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers in Israel, that will offer his oblation for all his vows, and for all his freewill offerings, which they will offer unto the LORD for a burnt offering; 22:19 Ye shall offer at your own will a male without blemish, of the beeves, of the sheep, or of the goats.

The animal offering must be from the free will of the person, but it must be without blemish for it represents the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ; who was without any blemish of sin.

22:20 But whatsoever hath a blemish, that shall ye not offer: for it shall not be acceptable for you. 22:21 And whosoever offereth a sacrifice of peace offerings unto the LORD to accomplish his vow, or a freewill offering in beeves or sheep, it shall be perfect to be accepted; there shall be no blemish therein. 22:22 Blind, or broken, or maimed, or having a wen, or scurvy, or scabbed, ye shall not offer these unto the LORD, nor make an offering by fire of them upon the altar unto the LORD.

A freewill offering is not a gift to the ministry nor is it a sacrifice to God, it is a sharing and eating [feasting] in rejoicing with family, friends and others in the presence of God (Deu 16:10-11) at the Feasts or in rejoicing at some significant occasion.

The festival freewill offering is not a sacrifice to God or a gift to the ministry, but is to be eaten by the offerer and shared with others in rejoicing at the Feasts.   Since there is no physical Temple today, and no physical sacrifices can be made and eaten at a physical Temple; it is appropriate to bring money and to share with the brethren at the festivals, but that will soon change when Messiah comes and the Ezekiel Temple is built!

Deuteronomy 16:10 And thou shalt keep the feast of weeks unto the LORD thy God with a tribute of a freewill offering of thine hand, which thou shalt give unto [share with the Levites and eat in the presence of] the LORD thy God, according as the LORD thy God hath blessed thee: 16:11 And thou shalt rejoice before the LORD thy God, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy manservant, and thy maidservant, and the Levite that is within thy gates, and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, that are among you, in the place which the LORD thy God hath chosen to place his name there.

A freewill offering is to be without blemish v 21 but may be less perfect than an offering made to God.  By that it is meant that an offering made to God must be a perfect and complete sacrifice, but a freewill offering could have a part missing [for example lacking a tail] as long as there are no blemishes on the remaining parts of the animal

Leviticus 22:23 Either a bullock or a lamb that hath any thing superfluous or lacking in his parts, that mayest thou offer for a freewill offering; but for a vow it shall not be accepted.

Back to the rule for sacrifices to God

22:24 Ye shall not offer unto the LORD that which is bruised, or crushed, or broken, or cut; neither shall ye make any offering thereof in your land.

The various animal and unleavened bread offerings represent the work and sacrifice of Christ for the repentant, therefore the unrepentant stranger may not offer any animal or unleavened bread offering in sacrifice.

Exodus 12:48 And when a stranger shall sojourn with thee, and will keep the passover to the Lord, let all his males be circumcised [New Covenant: converted in heart], and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land: for no uncircumcised [unconverted person] person shall eat thereof.

Leviticus 22:25 Neither from a stranger’s [the unrepentant] hand shall ye offer the bread of your God of any of these; because their corruption is in them, and blemishes be in them: they shall not be accepted for you.

Animals from eight days old may be accepted as offerings. This is because the eighth day represents a new beginning, as does circumcision on the eighth day and the Eighth Day Feast also represents a new beginning.

22:26 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 22:27 When a bullock, or a sheep, or a goat, is brought forth [born], then it shall be seven days under the dam; and from the eighth day and thenceforth it shall be accepted for an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

The mother and the young may not be killed on the same day

22:28 And whether it be cow, or ewe, ye shall not kill it and her young both in one day.

The Thank Offering must be eaten on the same day it is offered

22:29 And when ye will offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving unto the LORD, offer it at your own will. 22:30 On the same day it shall be eaten up; ye shall leave none of it until the morrow: I am the LORD.

22:31 Therefore shall ye keep my commandments, and do them: I am the LORD.

As Mosaic Israel was to hallow God and exalt him above all else in the heavens and the earth; so we of the New Covenant called out are to do likewise, and to exalt our most holy God above all things in heaven or on the earth to worship and obey him; learning and keeping all his ways and Word forever!

Because God called Israel and brought them out of bondage in Egypt they are to exalt him as most holy forever.  Because God called spiritual Israel and brought them out of bondage to Satan and sin [of which Egypt was a type] WE are to exalt him as most holy forever, and are to be zealous to learn and to live by every Word of God without any hint of compromise, forever.

22:32 Neither shall ye profane my holy name; but I will be hallowed among the children of Israel: I am the LORD which hallow you [makes you holy], 22:33 That brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the LORD.
