Second Corinthians 4 – 5

2 Corinthians 4

2 Corinthians 4:1 Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not; 4:2 But have renounced the hidden things [secret sins] of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully [dishonestly like many do today]; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.

4:3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost [The truth is hidden from those who refuse to live by every Word of God; for sin is the transgression of the law 1 John 3:4]: 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded [Satan has blinded with deception and separated sinners from God] the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

Those who would compromise and lack any love for living by every Word of God are lost unless they repent. We all know that this is the state of lukewarmness for God’s law prophesied for Laodicea (Rev 3:15), in this latter this day.

4:5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord [We are always to focus the brotherhood on God the Father and on Jesus Christ, and not on ourselves or our corporation. This is clearly not done in many churches today, where the name of Christ is used to focus people on themselves.]; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.

4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

God gives the light of truth and understanding through his Holy Spirit; given to those who keep all his commandments, (Acts 5:31).

4:7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels [God’s Spirit is given to us now, in our physical bodies of flesh], that the Excellency of the power may be of God, [so that we may know that the understanding and power to control our personal conduct is from God, and is not by our own strength.] and not of us.

We were made flesh and not spirit, so that we could learn that we do not achieve anything by our own efforts, as many are trying to do; and we can only achieve victory over sin through the power of Almighty God. It is the power of God’s Spirit which enables us to internalize the Word of God and the very nature of God, as defined by the Word of God.

4:8 We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 4:9 Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; 4:10 Always bearing about in the body the dying [sacrifice of] of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest [That we might reflect the very life of Jesus by our own conduct, following his example in all things] in our body [our lives].

4:11 For we which live are alway delivered [We destroy the old man of sin in the watery grave of baptism that we may become a new spiritual Christ-like being.] unto death for Jesus’ sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh [that Christ may dwell and do his will in us; through his Spirit] .

We ARE to LIVE as Christ LIVED and LIVES: In full obedience to God the Father, without ANY compromise.

We are to be filled with the passionate LOVE of God and ALL of God’s Word and commandments, as Jesus Christ was filled with an all consuming love for God the Father and his Word.

We are to seek the will of God the Father and DO IT with all our strength, and minds; and with all the strength to overcome that a loving Husband will give us.

It is an ignorant and spiritually foolish person indeed, who uses the writings of Paul to try and attack diligent obedience to God’s law!

4:12 So then death worketh in us, but life in you. 4:13 We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak; 4:14 Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you.

The death of the old sinful self, and the rising up from baptism as a NEW being, going forward to sin no more by the power of Jesus Christ living in us, brings eternal life in the spirit through our faith in the atoning sacrifice and promise of Jesus Christ.

4:15 For [we do] all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God.

4:16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward [spiritual] man is renewed day by day.

4:17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; 4:18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal [the things we endure in the flesh are physical and temporary.]; but the things which are [spiritual] not seen are eternal.

Our physical trials serve to keep us humble and focused on the things of God and his deliverance. We are NOT to be deceived into thinking that God’s commandments are burdensome; we are not to try and overcome by our own strength; and we are NOT to seek an easing of our affliction by compromising with God’s Word.

We ARE to seek the Lord our God with ALL our hearts and minds, and to RUN TO HIM to deliver us from all our troubles and trials.

Satan wants to pressure us into compromising with our commitment to God’s Word by heaping temptations and trials upon us.

Let us understand what is happening and RUN TO OUR GREAT GOD who can and will deliver us in his own way and time as he delivered Israel and Job and tens of thousands of the saints.

We are to become like little children who RUN TO THEIR FATHER when they are hurt and suffering; instead we have become foolish by trying to deliver ourselves out of all our trials of faith.

2 Corinthians 5

2 Corinthians 5:1 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved [if we were to die], we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, [a new spiritual body reserved by God for us] eternal in the heavens.

Knowing this; What can our enemies do to us? Whatever they do; we shall be victorious in the end, if we are faithful to God and his Word!

It is only by quitting the race that we can lose it; if we are Faithful to him who called us, and to he to whom we are called; delighting in his ways and nature as defined in God’s Word: We SHALL become united with God the Father and Jesus Christ and we SHALL receive the gift of eternal life.

5:2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our [new spiritual body] house which is from heaven: 5:3 If so be that being clothed [with righteousness which is the Word and nature of Almighty God (Rev 19:8)] we shall not be found naked [destitute of righteousness which is True Godliness (Rev 3:17).

5:4 For we that are in this [our physical bodies] tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon [that we would be clothed with the righteousness of God, which is defined by his law and the teachings of Jesus Christ, and a new spiritual body], that mortality [death] might be swallowed up of life [eternal].

5:5 Now he that hath wrought us [He who made us flesh, also created us to become godly] for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest [down payment] of the Spirit. 5:6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, [when we live after the worldliness of the flesh we are not one in unity with our Lord; when we are spiritual and become godly, we shall be together in unity with God] we are absent from the Lord: 5:7 (For we walk by faith [trust in God and hope] not by sight:

5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

We are willing to die for the faith, so as to receive eternal life with God.

5:9 Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent [physically alive or dead] , we may be accepted of him. 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done [he has done] in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

We SHALL ALL be judged by our faithfulness to ALL of God’s Word:

Revelation 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

1 Corinthians 5:11 Knowing therefore the terror [we respect and fear God] of the Lord, we persuade [teach] men; but we are made manifest [our own works are known by God] unto God; and I trust also are [known to you] made manifest in your consciences.

ALL our works are known by God, and we shall be judged by our works.

Are we filled with righteousness of God; which is the keeping and internalizing of his nature and living by every Word of God? or are we separated from God by our compromising, faithlessness and lukewarmness towards the very nature of God as revealed in his Word and Law?

Isaiah 59:1 Behold, the Lord‘s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

1 Corinthians 5:12 For we commend not ourselves again unto you, but give you occasion to glory on our behalf [we refrain from bragging so that you might give your own opinion] , that ye may have somewhat to answer them which glory in appearance, and [that you might respond to them that glory in words and not in deeds] not in heart.

5:13 For whether we be beside ourselves, it is to God: or whether we be sober, it is for your cause. 5:14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead

Christ had to die for us, to save us from eternal death for our sins. Therefore we are to destroy the old sinful person in the water of baptism, and are to become a NEW person in Christ; without sin (through Christ living in us) as Christ was without sin.

5:15 And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died [we should not live according to our own will and lusts, but according to the will of Christ who has died for us] for them, and rose again.

5:16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more [Christ is no longer flesh but spirit and we are to know him through the Spirit].

We are to no longer “know” things from a carnal and ungodly perspective, but we are to begin to see all things from a godly spiritual perspective.

5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things [the old man of sin is passed away; we are to become a new person in Christ; following his teachings and example and becoming like he is] are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

The things of our fleshly sinful nature should be passing away; and we are henceforth to be of God, to become spiritual and Godly! Through the keeping of ALL of God’s Word and Law; which reveal the nature and mind of God; revealing the intent, purpose and spirit of God’s Word and Law.

5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation [Christ acted for God the Father to bring reconciliation between men and God the Father] .

ALL those that the Father calls to Christ in the New Covenant have a responsibility to proclaim the Gospel of Salvation through sincere repentance and diligently living by every Word of God, internalizing the very nature of God.

5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.

Paul tells us in the name of Jesus Christ to STOP transgressing the Word of God!

5:21 For he hath made him to be sin [Christ took upon himself our sins] for us, who knew [who committed] no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

The righteousness of God is contained in every Word of God.

To be made the righteousness of God by the sacrifice of Christ and his indwelling Spirit: means to be at peace with; and at one with: THE WHOLE WORD OF GOD!

  1. This is a most interesting chapter for what Paul incidentally reveals:

5:16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more [Christ is no longer flesh but spirit and we are to know him through the Spirit].

This seems to say that Paul knew the human person Jesus Christ prior to His crucifixion. Was it through work or perhaps as students of scripture? Regardless of how such acquaintance occurred, the more important understanding came from Paul’s connection with the risen and glorified Jesus Christ and his response to the calling given to him.

In that brief verse as well as your commentary following it, we have the solution to the dwindling numbers in the various corporately organized groups. When all (or mostly all) the brethren are seeking godly repentance and proving it by their fruits of repentance, then God’s blessing is poured out on those He commissioned as evangelists and/or teachers and God’s calling can and will be extended to others.

That such is not occurring therefore shows that godly repentance is not occurring as it should be.
