106: The Kings of Israel and Judah

The following chart Source Link contains underlined links to short biographies of the various kings of Israel and Judah.  These biographies give a general idea and background of these kings which will be properly studied in the Kings and Chronicles studies.

Those kings who were generally good are in bolded green, those who began well but departed from righteousness are in bolded purple and the kings who were totally wicked are in normal text.

The first noticeable thing from the chart is that while Judah had a few good kings there were no good kings over Israel from the day that the kingdom of Israel was founded by Jeroboam.

The end of the Davidic kings until Messiah resurrects and brings David to rule over a united Israel and Judah

After the ten tribes were taken away from Judah and the Davidic line by Jeroboam; the kings of the Davidic line continued to reign in Judah, some good and many bad.

Finally God had had enough and God sent a prophecy that he will no longer tolerate ANY more kings of the line of David anywhere.

Ezekiel 21:27 I will overturn, overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until he come whose right it is [the resurrected David]; and I will give it him.

The words “I will overturn” means that God will overturn the throne by God’s own means rather than the natural death of the king through old age.

Some have interpreted this to mean that the throne was moved to Ireland then Scotland and finally to Great Britain where it thrives today.  What does this really say?

Watch those assumptions!  This does NOT say that the throne or kingdom will be settled and will not be overturned anymore after the third time.

No, this says that the line of David WILL END, it will be NO more;   until he come whose right it is;”

The phrase “it shall be no more, until he come whose right it is;” and I will give it him”;  says that the throne will be overturned three times [to three different kings]  and will then cease to exist until Christ comes with the resurrected David, who’s right it is to rule Israel!

This is about the royal line of David  and has absolutely no impact on the heritage of the British and American people, who’s founding people come from the sons of Joseph.  After all, was Israel any less Israel when she left David for the line of Jeroboam of Ephraim?

The “Overturn” prophecy was fulfilled as follows:

King Jehoahaz reigned for three months before his throne was overturned by Neco, king of Egypt, who dethroned him and replaced him with his brother, Eliakim. He was carried off to Egypt, where he died.

Then Eliakim using the regal name Jehoiakim reigned for 11 years before being killed by Nebuchadnezzar in the first big siege of Jerusalem c 597 B.C.  His kingdom was overturned to Jehoiachin (Jeconiah).

Rabbinical literature describes Jehoiakim as a godless tyrant who committed atrocious sins and crimes. He is portrayed as living in incestuous relations with his mother, daughter-in-law, and his father’s other wives, and was in the habit of murdering men, whose wives he then violated and whose property he seized. He also had tattooed his body (Jewish Encyclopedia)

Jehoiachin reigned for 3 months & 10 days until King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon took Jerusalem and brought king Jehoiachin (Jeconiah) to Babylon, where he lived and died.  Jehoiachin was replaced with Zedekiah by Nebuchadnezzar when Jerusalem was taken the first time.

Zedekiah was the last king to be overturned when his reign saw the second rebellion against Nebuchadnezzar (588-586 BC).  Jerusalem was captured for the second time after a lengthy siege and the Temple was burned.  Zedekiah wasblinded and taken into exile, and Judah reduced to a province.

This prophecy given by Ezekiel to Judah is about the end of the Davidic line, which expired with the final fall of Jerusalem and the Babylonian captivity,

From that date the line of David was to expire as a line of physical kings, because of their many great sins:  “until he come whose right it is [the resurrected king David]; and I will give it him“.

Later in 586 B.C. King Nebuchadnezzar again lays siege to Jerusalem. He destroys the city and burns its temple. The destruction of the temple starts on the 9th of Ab (Pre Rabbinic Calendar Temple Calendar) and completes on the 10th. The 9th of Ab will also be the day Jerusalem’s SECOND temple (Herod’s temple) would be completely destroyed in 70 A.D.  NOTE:  The Wailing Wall is a part of the Temple Mount retaining wall and is not part of the Temple itself.
